Racist attacks in Greece hit “alarming” levels: UNHCR

Source: Reuters

Racially motivated attacks have risen to alarming levels in Greece and authorities are doing little to tackle the problem, the U.N. refugee agency said in a report on Tuesday.

Greece is a major gateway for mostly Asian and African migrants trying to enter the European Union and immigrants face growing hostility as the debt-laden country goes through its worst economic downturn in six decades.

The agency said 87 racist attacks were recorded by rights and migrant groups between January and September this year, calling the results “exceptionally alarming”.

Actual numbers were likely to be far higher since victims were either too scared to report attacks to the police or turned away, it said.

“The victims speak of areas in Athens which have become off limits to them due to the fear of attack”, UNHCR said in the report.

“It is telling that no perpetrator of a violent racist attack has been sentenced.”

Most victims were attacked in public spaces such as squares or on public transport, usually by groups of men dressed in black and at times wearing helmets or with their faces covered.

Some of the more prominent attacks against immigrants reported this year include a young Iraqi stabbed to death in Athens in August and an Albanian stabbed with a sword by a masked motorcycle rider in May.

The attackers often used clubs or crowbars and sometimes large dogs, the report said.

Most victims were undocumented migrants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Somalia.

The agency said in some cases victims said their attackers were wearing the insignia of the far-right Golden Dawn party.

Golden Dawn was catapulted out of obscurity this year on a fiercely anti-immigrant agenda, the first time an ultra-nationalist group has entered parliament since the fall of a military junta in 1974.

Its members give Nazi-style salutes and the party’s emblem resembles a swastika but the group denies the neo-Nazi label.

“Today we are sounding alarm bells because racist violence and the threat of fascism have spread and threaten democracy,” said Costis Papaioannou, head of Greece’s National Commission for Human Rights.

The UNHCR said it found 15 incidents where police officers used violence during routine checks and cited the inability or unwillingness by police to investigate the cases and arrest the attackers as the main problem.

The agency said many victims did not report the attacks because they were afraid they would be deported, adding that police were more interested in whether the victim was legally in Greece rather than investigating the attack.

“The public interest to prosecute and respond to acts of criminal violence should take priority over the public interest to control those who remain irregularly in the country,” it said.

The First Ever Solar Elevator…Made in Greece

Greek engineer Yiannis Sachsamanoglou and his team have managed to develop the technology required for a home elevator to function at a low cost on solar energy.

Their project was chosen by the European Commission to be the Greek entry in the EU Climate Campaign for 2012.

Sachsamanoglou, who got the idea of a solar lift from his young daughter, says that creating an adequate photovoltaic system is not difficult per se; the real challenge was making it cost effective.

The team achieved this after four years of extensive research, hoping that the cost will further decrease when a mass scale production of solar lifts creates economies of scale.

The solar elevator has very low power consumption (about 80% less than conventional lifts) and works with batteries which are charged using solar power -for three days- or, on a cloudy day, single-phase electric power.

This way, the lift is functional even during a power cut, earthquake or fire, so there is no chance for users to be trapped in the cabin.

Mezolift, Sachsamanoglou’s company, is currently installing a solar lift in a building in Cyprus, where solar panels will also supply the power for communal lighting and door phones.

This will make it the world’s first occupant evacuation elevator functioning on an autonomous photovoltaic system.

Minister Bagis warns Greek Cypriots ahead of Europa League match

EU Minister Bagis said Turkey would carry even a slightest problem during AEL Limassol FC-Fenerbahce game, to international institutions.

Greek Cypriots know it too, Bagis told AA on Tuesday.

Turkey’s Fenerbahce and Greek Cypriot AEL Limassol FC will play an UEFA Europa League game on October 25 in Greek Cypriot side.

People have concerns regarding AEL Limassol-Fenerbahce game as Turkish teams had faced several difficulties in Greek Cypriot side in the past games, said Bagis, adding, “Greek Cypriots very well know that we don’t hesitate to carry even a slightest problem to international institutions.”

This game is an opportunity for Greek Cypriot administration to prove whether it is a state or not, said Bagis, adding, “because past mistakes show that Greek Cypriots are not even a tribe, let alone a state. Now they have an opportunity.”

Commenting on Fenerbahce’s not being able to go to Cyprus via Ercan Airport in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Bagis said that Fenerbahce could not use the airport as TRNC was not a recognized country by the EU as well as due to UEFA and EU rules.

George Michael Cancels Australia Tour Dates Due To ‘Major Anxiety’

George Michaels Cancels Tour

British singer George Michael has cancelled his tour of Australia due to “major anxiety” brought on by his recent battle with severe pneumonia, he announced on his website.

The former Wham! frontman said that he would complete his Symphonica Tour dates in Britain in October before seeking treatment.

He had been due to open in Australia in Perth on Nov. 10 before performing in Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Hunter Valley on Dec. 1.

“I have … announced the cancellation of the shows in Australia which breaks my heart,” Michael said in a statement.

The 49-year-old “Careless Whisper” and “Faith” singer fell ill in Vienna last November and was treated under intensive care for a month for a life-threatening illness.

He was forced to postpone his tour but resumed it some 10 months later.

“Since last year’s illness I have tried in vain to work my way through the trauma that the doctors who saved my life warned me I would experience,” Michael said.

“They recommended complete rest … but I’m afraid I believed (wrongly) that making music and getting out there to perform for the audiences that bring me such joy would be therapy enough in itself.”

He said his return to the stage had brought him “great happiness” and that some of his recent performances were his best to date, but concluded:

“I was wrong to think I could work my way through the major anxiety that has plagued me since I left Austria last December.

“All that’s left for me to do is apologise to my wonderful Australian fan base and to promise faithfully that as soon as I completed these shows here in the UK, I will receive the treatment which is so long overdue.”

Tickets to his Australian concerts will be refunded.

Michael has sold an estimated 100 million records over his career, but he has hit headlines in recent years for his personal life more often than for his music.

In 1998 he was arrested in California for “engaging in a lewd act” in a public toilet and has had a string of run-ins with British police for possession of narcotics. He also served a term in jail for driving under the influence of cannabis.

Government to set up foreign land register for agricultural land and Independent senator Nick Xenophon dismissed the plan as “window dressing”

Prime Minister Julia Gillard

THE federal government will introduce a foreign ownership register for agricultural land, Prime Minister Julia Gillard has told farmers.

The register will provide a more comprehensive picture of the specific size and locations of foreign agricultural landholdings.

The prime minister’s announcement at the National Farmers Federation national congress in Canberra on Tuesday was applauded by delegates.

The government shortly will release a paper to begin discussions with stakeholders including farmers, the states and territories about the design and content of the register.

Ms Gillard said she wanted to take the politics out of foreign ownership.

“Foreign investment is not a new thing,” she said.

Just 0.1 per cent of total direct foreign investment is in agriculture, forestry and fishing, while 89 per cent of agricultural land is entirely Australian-owned.

A further six per cent is majority Australian-owned.

That proportion was roughly similar to levels 30 years ago, Ms Gillard said.

A working group that includes Treasury and other government agencies will release a consultation paper soon.

The final design of the register will take into account the need to improve transparency of foreign ownership in agriculture without imposing unnecessary burdens on investors or duplicating work already undertaken by state and territory governments.

Federation president Jock Laurie described the announcement as “fantastic”.

“We have been calling that for a while,” he told reporters, adding there was nothing better than a truly informed debate.

“I think a register will give the community that information.”

Shadow treasurer Joe Hockey welcomed the register, adding it was an idea the coalition had been pushing for months.

“Whether it’s their policy or our policy, I think great transparency in relation to foreign investment in agricultural interests will alleviate a lot of the concerns,” he told reporters in Melbourne.

Mr Hockey urged the government to go further by referring any agricultural land sale valued at more than $15 million to the Foreign Investment Review Board for consideration.

Independent senator Nick Xenophon dismissed the plan as “window dressing”, saying it would not address community concerns about the foreign takeover of Cubbie Station in Queensland.

The controversial sale of Australia’s largest cotton farm to a Chinese-led consortium was finalised after being given the green light by the Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB).

Senator Xenophon said he was still concerned by claims made in a Senate estimates hearing last week that an Australian bidder may have been ignored.

“The register will do nothing to answer the questions raised by Australian-owned companies bidding for Cubbie Station who say they haven’t had a fair go in the process,” he said in a statement.

Trade Minister Craig Emerson warned farmers at the National Farmers Federation (NFF) congress on Monday against supporting such action, claiming it would be to their disadvantage.
