Australians The World’s Wealthiest

Australians now boast the highest median wealth in the world…

Despite all the glum faces, Australians have been found to boast the highest median wealth in the world.

According to the third annual Credit Suisse Global Wealth Report, the median wealth per adult in Australia is a whopping $189,552. This is the highest of all 216 countries surveyed by the big bank.

And the good news doesn’t stop there either, with Australia also boasting the highest proportion of people with wealth above $100,000 at eight times the world average.

“These are times of unprecedented economic change, and a radical reconfiguration of the world’s economic order is taking shape,” says Francesco de Ferrari, Singapore-based head of private banking for Asia Pacific at Credit Suisse.

It appears that radical reconfiguration is seriously tilted in Australia’s favour.
“Asia- Pacific, which makes up two-thirds of the world’s middle class of emerging consumers, remains the key growth engine of the world economy and global wealth.” de Ferrari says of the region.

According to the Credit Suisse report, the Euro Zone debt crisis has sucked an enormous $10.6 trillion from the value of household assets in that region. This compares to the Asia Pacific region shedding $1.4 trillion.

Globally household wealth has fallen by 5.2% since the middle of last year, but is expected to grow by almost 50% over the next five years.

This surging wealth of Australians probably means there’s no better place to be selling your small business wares.

RECORD $76K PAID FOR MANGOES FOR CHARITY

The season’s first symbolic tray of mangoes has fetched a record-breaking sum at an auction at the Brisbane markets at Rocklea on the city’s southside.

Mango producers and greengrocers celebrate the start of Queensland’s mango season by auctioning off a tray of the fruit in Brisbane each year.

After some confusion, well-known greengrocer Sam Coco won the tray of kensington prides with a bid of $76,000.

“I thought I had a bid, but however the other chap already had the bid and they restarted – unusual,” he said.

“However that got another $15,000 or $16,000 so I think it was the most exciting mango sale I’ve ever seen.”

Brisbane Markets Limited spokeswoman Vanessa Kennedy says the symbolic event has been running for 15 years.

“These are usually independent greengrocers – a lot of them want to be able to give back something to the industry and more than anything the charities that they do this for,” she said.

“There are actually plenty [of mangoes] in the stores at the moment, [but] this is the symbolic tray of mangoes.

“We like to do it a bit later in the season when the real flavour has occurred in the mangoes.

“You would be expecting these beautifully oval, flushed-in colour mangoes and they’re going to be juicy.”

The money will go to children’s charities Life Education Queensland and Redkite.

Point Piper … the highest prices and highest incomes in the country.

If you’re after bragging rights over how expensive your home is, Sydney is the place to be.

Perth and Melbourne are the only other major cities that feature as magnets for the very wealthy but are a distant second and third behind the harbour city.

Sydney has 19 of Australia’s most expensive 25 suburbs, according to the RP Data Property Pulse released today. Perth has three, Melbourne two and Eagle Bay in Western Australia’s Margaret River region also gets a top 25 ranking.

The suburb with the highest median house price in Australia is Point Piper in Sydney, where the very impressive bricks and mortar will cost you around $7.4 million. That gets you a place only four kilometres away from the the centre of town, on average.

Point Piper residents have the highest average incomes in the nation, averaging just over $182,000.

‘‘If you own a house in Point Piper you have truly made it,’’ RP Data research director Tim Lawless said.

A cheaper joint, at $6.5 million, is available at Watson’s Bay, seven kilometres away from the city centre. In third place is Centennial Park, followed by Woolwich – both in Sydney.

Perth’s Peppermint Grove takes fifth spot, where your flash pad will set you back $4.3 million. It’s 10 kilometres from the city centre, but one would think there must be a bus service.

Melbourne is much more affordable. A Toorak mansion can be bought for a song: only $2.8 million.

But it’s 12th among the top 25. And all sports fans know that no one ever remembers the runners-up.

Bringing up the rear of the top 25 is Sydney’s Bronte, where your very sweet home will pull $2.01 million from your bank account.

The best deal may be in Hobart, at Battery Point, where one can settle down for just $861,000 and be only one kilometre from the city centre.

Battery Point attains the lowly rank of 365 but it is the only suburb in Australia where it costs less than $1 million to buy into the elite hosing market.

Mr Lawless said suburbs on the property rich list tended be in areas near the central business district, close to the water, or featured houses with a heritage value or houses perched on larger blocks of land.

Only three of the top 25 most expensive suburbs are further than 10 kilometres from the capital city central business district.

The population living within the most expensive 25 suburbs accounts for just 0.5 per cent of Australia’s population.

The property data does not say if the top 25 suburbs are tree-lined, but 15 of them have in their names: bay, point, grove, park, hill, heights or beach.

Έλληνας μαθητής της Β’ Γυμνασίου, από τα Γιαννιτσά ήταν ο νικητής του διεθνούς διαγωνισμού έκθεσης της Παγκόσμιας Ταχυδρομικής Ένωσης (UPU). Το θέμα του φετινού διαγωνισμού ήταν… «Γράψτε μια επιστολή σε έναν αθλητή ή μια μορφή του αθλητισμού που θαυμάζετε, για να εξηγήσετε τι σημαίνουν για εσάς οι Ολυμπιακοί Αγώνες». Στο διαγωνισμό πήραν μέρος πάνω από 1 εκατομμύριο νέοι από 55 χώρες, μέσω των ταχυδρομείων τους και νικητής αναδείχτηκε ο 14χρονος Έλληνας.

«Η σύνθεση είναι πρωτότυπη, πολύ προσωπική και δημιουργική, ενώ αναδεικνύονται έντονα οι Ολυμπιακές αξίες», αναφέρει η διεθνής κριτική επιτροπή επισημαίνοντας τον απλό και δημιουργικό τρόπο γραφής του Μάριου Χατζηδήμου. Ο νικητής θα βραβευθεί την Παγκόσμια Ημέρα Ταχυδρομείου, δηλ. στις 9 Οκτωβρίου 2012, στην Ντόχα του Κατάρ, στο πλαίσιο του 25ου Παγκόσμιου Συνεδρίου της ΠΤΕ που θα διεξαχθεί με τη συμμετοχή 149 χωρών. Τον Απρίλιο ο 14χρονος είχε αναδειχτεί νικητής στον αντίστοιχο πανελλήνιο διαγωνισμό και η έκθεση διαβιβάστηκε στο διεθνές γραφείο της Π.Τ.Ε μέσω των ΕΛ.ΤΑ, όπου και έγινε η τελική κρίση των εκθέσεων των μαθητών από όλες τις χώρες. Αγαπητέ Ρότζερ Φέντερερ,
Είμαι ο Μάριος, ένας από τους χιλιάδες, φαντάζομαι θαυμαστές σου. Ένας μικρός, ασήμαντος Μάριος, μπροστά σ’ έναν γίγαντα του αθλητισμού. Κι ο λόγος που σου γράφω; Για να σ’ ευχαριστήσω… να σ’ ευχαριστήσω, που ξύπνησες μέσα μου την αγάπη για τον αθλητισμό και το τένις!
Χρόνια παρακολουθώ τους αγώνες και τις προσπάθειές σου στα γήπεδα, χειροκροτώ τις νίκες σου και θαυμάζω την επιμονή σου στις δύσκολες στιγμές. Το ανέβασμα σου όμως στο βάθρο του νικητή στους Ολυμπιακούς Αγώνες του Πεκίνου, ήταν το «σερβίς», για την δική μου είσοδο στο άθλημα.
Άρπαξα την παρατημένη ρακέτα του αδελφού μου και αποφασιστικά μπήκα στο γήπεδο, έτοιμος να νικήσω. Τότε συνειδητοποίησα πόσο διαφορετικό είναι, να βλέπεις την ρακέτα στα χέρια του Φέντερερ από το να προσπαθείς να την κουμαντάρεις στα δικά σου χέρια. Παιδεύτηκα, ίδρωσα, άκουσα δικαιολογημένα τις φωνές του προπονητή μου, όμως δεν τα παράτησα. Η μορφή σου στο βάθρο του Ολυμπιονίκη, με κρατούσε εκεί και συνέχιζα…
Συνέχιζα και ονειρευόμουνα… Κάποια μέρα, κτυπώντας το μπαλάκι, εκ σφενδονίστηκε μαζί και η φαντασία μου, μακριά, πολύ μακριά στον χρόνο και στον τόπο. Βρέθηκα, λέει, εκεί, στην Αρχαία Ολυμπία, στην μεγάλη γιορτή του αθλητισμού, στους πρώτους επίσημους Ολυμπιακούς Αγώνες. 776 π.Χ.- οι κήρυκες γυρνούν όλη την Ελλάδα και αναγγέλλουν το γεγονός. Οι πόλεμοι σταματούν, γιατί ο αθλητισμός ενώνει και συμφιλιώνει τους ανθρώπους, έτσι τουλάχιστον ήταν τότε! Νέοι από κάθε άκρη της χώρας, καταφθάνουν εκεί με λεβέντικη ψυχή και σώμα, για ν’ αγωνισθούν τον «καλόν αγώνα», το «Ευ αγωνίζεσθαι». Τι υπέροχες λέξεις, τι φανταστική ατμόσφαιρα!
Ήσουν κι εσύ, λέει, εκεί. Οι ιστορικές μου γνώσεις σε απορρίπτουν, όμως η φαντασία μου σε θέλει εκεί. Ν’ αγωνίζεσαι και να στεφανώνεσαι με την αγριελιά. Να ποτίζεις με τον ιδρώτα σου, το χώμα της αρχαίας Ολυμπίας και να δοξάζεσαι μαζί με τον Διαγόρα της Ρόδου, τον Πολυδάμα, τον Θεαγένη.
Ναι, είμαι περήφανος, που η δική μου πατρίδα, η Ελλάδα, έθεσε τα θεμέλια του σύγχρονου αθλητισμού. Το αθλητικό πνεύμα, σαρκώθηκε και μορφοποιήθηκε στους αγώνες της αρχαιότητας. Η Ολυμπιακή φλόγα, λαμπρυνόμενη με τις άξιες του Ελληνικού πολιτισμού, φώτισε την οικουμένη. Η αγωνιστικότητα, η ευγενής άμιλλα, ο αυτοέλεγχος, η συνεργασία, μέσ’ από τον αθλητισμό, εμπλούτισαν και όλη την στάση του ανθρώπου απέναντι στην ζωή…
…Στεκόσουν εκεί, στεφανωμένος, ακτινοβολώντας την χαρά της νίκης, όταν σε πλησίασα ντροπ αλά, σου έπιασα το χέρι, σε κοίταξα στα μάτια και σε ρώτησα:
– Πως νοιώθεις, Ρότζερ; Τι σημαίνουν για σένα όλα αυτά;
– Άκου μικρέ μου, μου απάντησες με μια φωνή κρυστάλλινη, που ακόμα αντηχεί στ’ αυτιά μου. «Αγωνίζομαι» σημαίνει «νικώ», να το θυμάσαι αυτό. Η συμμετοχή, ο αγώνας, είναι ήδη μια μεγάλη νίκη, ανεξάρτητα απ’ το τρόπαιο. Νίκη ενάντια στους φόβους, τις ανασφάλειες και τις δυσκολίες του εαυτού σου, ενάντια στον εγωισμό και την φιλαυτία σου. Νίκη υπέρβασης του εαυτού σου. Και κάτι ακόμα: «Νικώ» σημαίνει «Αγαπώ». Αγαπώ τον συναγωνιστή μου, που μου έδωσε την ευκαιρία ν’ αγωνιστώ, τον προπονητή μου, που μου έμαθε τον τρόπω ν’ αγωνίζομαι και να νικώ, τον κόσμο που με στηρίζει στην προσπάθεια και στον δρόμο προς τη νίκη, τον Θεό, που μου χαρίζει την δυνατότητα ν’ αγωνίζομαι και να νικώ!

– Άουτ! Μάριε, συγκεντρώσου επιτέλους στο παιχνίδι! Ήταν η φωνή του προπονητή μου, που με έβγαλε ξαφνικά από την ονειροπόλησή μου. Όμως όχι, εκείνη την ημέρα, δεν ήταν δυνατόν να συγκεντρωθώ σε κανένα παιχνίδι. Ήθελα να διηγηθώ, όλα αυτά που έζησα, στους πρώτους Ολυμπιακούς αγώνες. Όλοι μαζί, ο προπονητής και οι συμπαίκτες μου, γίναμε μια συντροφιά κι αναβαπτισθήκαμε στο πνεύμα των Ολυμπιακών αγώνων. Μιλήσαμε για το περίφημο «Ευ αγωνίζεσθαι», αυτό που οι σύγχρονοι άνθρωποι, μπορούν τέλεια να ερμηνεύσουν ετυμολογικά, όσον όμως αφορά την πράξη, δυσκολεύονται απ ό λίγο έως τραγικά! Στοχεύοντας αποκλειστικά στον πρωταθλητισμό, λούζονται στα βρώμικα κι επικίνδυνα νερά των αναβολικών, θυσιάζοντας στον βωμό της εφήμερης δόξας, την καθαρότητα της ψυχής και του σώματος. Η εξόντωση του αθλητή και η δυσφήμιση των αγώνων, είναι το μόνο αντίτιμο που εισπράττει κανείς από τέτοιες ενέργειες.
Ε, λοιπόν για μένα οι Ολυμπιακοί Αγώνες δεν σημαίνουν, ούτε αναβολικά, ούτε πρωταθλητισμό, ούτε οικονομικά συμφέροντα, οικονομική κρίση, αντιζηλίες και μίση. Σημαίνουν χαρά για την συμμετοχή, «ευ αγωνίζεσθαι», φιλία, ειρήνη και σ’ αυτό το πνεύμα εύχομαι να σταθούν οι φετινοί Ολυμπιακοί Αγώνες.

Σταματώ εδώ την φλυαρία μου, που ίσως σε κούρασε και σου εύχομαι μέσα απ’ την ψυχή μου, σε όλη σου την ζωή, ν’ αγωνίζεσαι, να νικάς και ν’ αγαπάς, όπως ακριβώς εσύ μου δίδαξες. Σ’ ευχαριστώ για άλλη μια φορά και σε περιμένω, εκεί που πρωτοσυναντηθήκαμε… Στην αρχαία Ολυμπία, στην Ελλάδα, στην πατρίδα του πολιτισμού και του αθλητισμού. Στην πανέμορφη και πολυαγαπημένη μου πατρίδα, που όσες δυσκολίες και τρικυμίες κι αν περνά τώρα, « δεν την σκιάζει φοβέρα καμιά», γιατ’ «έχει στο κατάρτι της βιγλάτορα, παντοτινό, τον Ήλιο, τον Ηλιάτορα»!

The Slap, The Amazing Race Australia up for International Emmys.

Nominees have been announced for the 2012 International Emmys.

From Australia, The Slap from Matchbox Pictures / ABC / Screen Australia is nominated for Drama Series.

It competes with Braquo (France), ICAC Investigators 2011 (Hong Kong), The Kitchen Musical (Singapore) and The Social Leader (Argentina).

The Amazing Race Australia from Seven Productions-Seven Network (Operations) Ltd. / Active TV / ABC Studios is nominated for Non-Scripted Entertainment against entries from Singapore, Brazil and Spain.

Other nominees included Black Mirror, Absolutely Fabulous and Queen: Days of Our Lives.

Winners will receive their Emmys at the 40th International Emmy Awards Gala, on November 19, in New York City.

In the first International Emmy Kids Awards, SLiDE from Hoodlum/Playmaker Media/Fox 8/Foxtel was nominated for Kids: Series against entries from Brazil, Japan and Norway.

Winners for the International Emmy Kids Awards will be announced on February 8, 2013 in New York City.

Diggers will revisit desert battlefields

THE walls of Alf Carpenter’s Georgetown home are barely visible beneath his many commendations, medals and certificates.

There are notes of gratitude not just from the Australian government, but also from those in Greece and Crete which underscore a lifetime of active military service.

There is honour on every centimetre of those walls, but the 95-year-old says nothing will compare to the pride he will have next week when he returns to the El Alamein War Cemetery in Egypt to honour those he fought beside.

Mr Carpenter will join a group of World War II veterans, led by Veterans’ Affairs Minister Warren Snowden, revisiting the battlefields of the North Africa Campaign and the Battle of El Alamein, where they helped defeat Axis forces 70 years ago.

Mr Carpenter, who fought in Libya, Egypt, Greece, Crete and Syria, served in the Army as part of the 2/4th Battalion and has returned to the Middle East several times since the end of the war.

The veterans will participate in memorial services at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, held at El Alamein War Cemetery, Egypt.

The cemetery holds more than 7000 fallen Commonwealth soldiers, including more than 1000 Australians.

“I’m terribly excited about setting down in North Africa and honouring all those who served, especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice,” Mr Carpenter said, adding the daunting trip was unlikely to slow him down.

“I’ve been the president of the local RSL and the 2/4th Association.

I’ve been around the world twice and I’m the over-90s swimming champ at the Diggers Swim Club.

The key is: never stop,” he said.

The veterans, aged 88 to 95, represent every branch of the armed services and include former prisoners of war, a nurse and several members of the Rats of Tobruk.

As well as the 1000 dead, 200 Australians were listed missing, and 3600 wounded.

Mr Snowden will host a function for the veterans before they leave next week.
