Greece may face the possibility of snap elections if Golden Dawn MPs resign en masse from Parliament, an option that party leader Nikos Michaloliakos refused to discount on Thursday.

Prime Minister Antonis Samaras may face the choice of having to choose between a series of by-elections or going to a national ballot if the far-right party’s 18 lawmakers quit their seats.

There would be a number of constitutional peculiarities involved if Golden Dawn walks out. Firstly, one of its MPs is from a state list, which means he has not been elected directly but has been awarded a seat in Parliament based on his party’s share of the national vote. Opinion is split on whether ballots would have to be held around the country to decide which party would gain this seat.

There would also have to be by-elections to replace the remaining MPs and Samaras fears this might be destabilizing for the country.

SYRIZA indicated on Thursday that it would aim to increase its presence in Parliament if by-elections are held and then push for general elections. “SYRIZA will turn these elections into a referendum on Nazism and the [EU-IMF] memorandum and into a stepping stone so that there can be national elections and a new parliamentary majority,” said leftist MP Dimitris Papadimoulis.

Michaloliakos refused to say if his party would quit but stressed that Golden Dawn could not be held responsible for the “political turmoil” that would follow such a move.

The predicament for Samaras came as the government was put on alert by a statement issued by the Association of Special Forces Reservists (KEED) on Wednesday. The group called for the government to resign and be replaced by a caretaker administration that would suspend any commitments Greece had under its bailout terms. The tone of the statement suggested a direct intervention in the democratic process but KEED issued a statement Thursday denying that it had any intention of encouraging a coup.

Nevertheless, the statement prompted an emergency meeting of ministry and judicial officials at the Supreme Court. Government spokesman Simos Kedikoglou described the issue as “troubling” but said that “the overwhelming majority of men in the armed forces are dedicated to democracy.”

An investigation into the phone records of Golden Dawn members has revealed information that could lead to charges being brought against at least three of the neofascist party’s MPs, judicial sources revealed on Thursday.

Supreme Court deputy prosecutor Charalambos Vourliotis has been probing the phone records to find evidence that would allow party members and MPs to be tried for being part of a criminal organization, which carries stiff prison sentences. To proceed with such charges, there needs to be evidence that the violent attacks and other criminal behavior, such as extortion and bribery, were carried out according to a fixed pattern.

Wiretaps carried out by the National Intelligence Service (EYP) indicate that at least three Golden Dawn MPs were in direct contact with members allegedly involved in illegal activities, sources said.

Authorities are also considering probing bank accounts as part of their investigation.

The effort to pinpoint and remove any influence that Golden Dawn may have within the police force continued on Thursday with raids by internal affairs officers on precincts in western Attica. The police stations in Peristeri and Aegaleo were searched following complaints that officers there failed to investigate attacks on immigrants.

Internal affairs also searched the headquarters of the police’s anti-terrorist unit (EKAM) but sources said nothing suspicious was found.

His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America welcomed yesterday at the Archdiocese Headquarters the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades, who is visiting New York for the United Nations General Assembly.

President Anastasiades was accompanied by his wife, the First Lady of Cyprus Andri Anastasiades, the Ambassador of Cyprus to the United States George Chacalli, the Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the UN Ambassador Nicos Emiliou, Government Spokesman Christos Stylianides, the Director of the President’s Diplomatic Office Nicos Christodoulides and his associate Pantelis Pantelides, the Consul General of Cyprus in New York Koula Sofianou and Panikos Papanikoloaou, past president of the Cyprus Federation of America. His Grace Bishop Sevastianos of Zela and Fr. Alexandros Karloutsos also attended the meeting on behalf of the Archdiocese.

During the meeting, Archbishop Demetrios outlined for President Anastasiades the efforts of the Archdiocese and the Greek American community in support of Cyprus throughout the years, and especially after the recent economic crisis which hit the people of Cyprus. In turn, the President expressed the gratitude of the people of Cyprus for all the help and relief assistance and presented an overview of the efforts of his government to overcome the crisis and reach a just and fair solution to the problem of Cyprus.

Talk shows, music programs and hourly news bulletins make up the schedule of a new public radio station, Proto Programma, which began broadcasting on Thursday.

The radio station, which replaces those of defunct state TV and radio broadcaster ERT, is primarily staffed by former ERT employees and transmitting on the 95.6 FM frequency, among others.

Meanwhile, the Council of State is expected to deliver a decision on Friday on an appeal by the union representing ERT workers, POSPERT, regarding the government’s closure of the public broadcaster on June 11.

A visually gorgeous and musically compelling production

There’s no such thing as unconditional absolution from the Greek gods: this Everyman and Cork Operatic Society co-production of a tightened, re-orchestrated Orpheus reminds us that no gift is unalloyed. The prophet Cassandra is doomed never to be believed; Persephone will be released from Hades only if she doesn’t eat anything, and she does; and as for Orpheus – he is given the greatest gift of all in bringing his wife Eurydice back from the dead, provided that he doesn’t look at her. Wouldn’t you know it – he looks.

The wonder is that such a marvel as Gluck’s opera survives with no diminution of its mystical bereavement. Here, its power is enhanced by an astonished gratitude that a provincial theatre with limited resources can mount a production so visually gorgeous and musically compelling.

Poverty may impose simplicity but once director, musical director and orchestrator John O’Brien chose this daring route – the performance is mounted on Lisa Zagone’s design of unevenly layered pipes reflecting Michael Hurley’s lighting – all he had to worry about was the quality of his musicians and his singers. Not one of them lets him down.

This is not to say that O’Brien doesn’t take liberties with the formalities of the score, but he does so with authority: this is his rendering of a myth that has a head-spinning number of versions, even for Gluck.

The musicians double and sometimes triple up as those interfering gods (Artemis is bassoon and recorder, Dionysus wields a violin, Hera has two harps and an organ, Athene plays the viola and Apollo is French horn and organ) and move accordingly from pit to stage. This is not a stunt but a gathering of chorus, soloists and even the audience into the ambience of the stricken Orpheus in a deepening of the emotional connections between all three.

Soprano Majella Cullagh announces the plot in a voice infused with compassion as Love, and Tara Brandel’s Eurydice expresses herself in dance (her fatal tantrums suggest that Orpheus is well rid of her). Tenor Ronald Samm invests Orpheus with a lyric pathos so that at the end he makes one of opera’s most famous arias totally his own.

His lament Che farò senza Euridice is threaded through the soprano saxophone with which Carolyn Goodwin voices the eternally lost Eurydice.

As the crimson curtain descends behind, he stands silent and alone. It’s terrific. Ends Saturday

Σωστή η μετωπική σύγκρουση», υποστήριξε η βουλευτής της Νέας Δημοκρατίας Ντόρα Μπακογιάννη αναφερόμενη στο στόχο της κυβέρνησης να «μπλοκάρει» τη δράση της Χρυσής Αυγής.

Η πρώην υπουργός, μιλώντας νωρίτερα στον ραδιοφωνικό σταθμό Real FM, πρόσθεσε ότι «Θα ήταν χρήσιμη μια σύσκεψη των πολιτικών αρχηγών. «Τώρα ή και μεταγενέστερα. Η σύσκεψη των πολιτικών αρχηγών δεν θα έδινε απάντηση στο δικαστικό θέμα, θα έδειχνε ότι τα κόμματα είναι αποφασισμένα να υπερασπιστούν την κοινοβουλευτική μας δημοκρατία. Είναι μια αρχή συνεννόησης που είναι απαραίτητη».

Η κ. Μπακογιάννη, αναφέρθηκε και στις Γερμανικές εκλογές χαρακτηρίζοντας θρίαμβο την επανεκλογή της Ανγκελα Μέρκελ: «Πρόκειται περί ενός μεγάλου προσωπικού θριάμβου της Μέρκελ. Οι Γερμανοί ψήφισαν τελικά Ευρωπαϊκά. Ο καταποντισμός των φιλελευθέρων οφείλεται στην αντιευρωπαϊκή και ανθελληνική πολιτική που είχαν», σχολίασε και συνέχισε:

«Με την ανυπαρξία της Γαλλίας να κρατήσει ισορροπητικό ρόλο, βρέθηκε να παίζει μπάλα μόνη της η Μέρκελ. Θα χρειαστεί οπωσδήποτε τον μεγάλο συνασπισμό. Η Μέρκελ από την Γερμανία πήρε την δικαίωση που ήθελε και θα κοιτάξει».

Επιπλέον επεσήμανε ότι πιστεύει στην Ευρωπαϊκή προοπτική «Η Ευρώπη είναι στον πάτο του βαρελιού», είπε χαρακτηριστικά «Είναι η μεγαλύτερη κρίση από την ίδρυση της. Κυρίως μετά τις ευρωεκλογές, η ώρα της αλήθειας πλησιάζει. Η Ευρώπη η θα διαλυθεί ή θα βγει από αυτή την κρίση ενωμένη και έχοντας πάρει το μάθημα της».

Μια από τις ελάχιστες εξαιρέσεις του κλήρου αποτελεί ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Κύπρου Χρυσόστομος, ο οποίος μίλησε για το ΕΛΑΜ και την Χρυσή Αυγή αντικειμενικά και μακριά από πολιτικές σκοπιμότητες.

Ο ιεράρχης της μαρτυρικής νήσου χαρακτήρισε για ακόμη μία φορά τους παράνομους αλλοδαπούς «παρείσακτους» τους οποίους, όμως αγαπάει και τους καλεί να πάνε στη χώρα τους. Ερωτώμενος για τα θετικά σχόλια που είχε κάνει στο παρελθόν για το Ε.ΛΑ.Μ. ανέφερε πως κάποιοι προσπαθούν να κάνουν λαϊκισμό και να τον κατηγορήσουν.

“Τότε που εμφανίστηκαν αυτά τα παιδιά, τα κάλεσα και ήρθαν στην Αρχιεπισκοπή και είδα αρκετά θετικά στοιχεία, όπως και αρνητικά. Και τους είπα, ότι με τα αρνητικά στοιχεία δεν συμφωνώ.

Ζούμε σε ένα δημοκρατικό πολίτευμα και πρέπει να είναι δημοκρατικοί πολίτες και ο τόπος αυτός έχει τόσα προβλήματα που δεν πρέπει να του επισωρεύσουμε άλλα προβλήματα” είπε.

“Συμφωνούσα μαζί τους στο ότι ήθελαν να διωχθούν οι παράνομοι”, πρόσθεσε.

“Μάλιστα με ρώτησαν τότε τι λέει το Ευαγγέλιο και είπα το Ευαγγέλιο λέει να αγαπούμε. Τους αγαπούμε αυτούς τους παρείσακτους, αυτούς τους παράνομους που ήρθαν, αλλά να πάνε στην πατρίδα τους”, είπε ακόμη ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Κύπρου. “Δεν είναι ρατσιστικό αυτό, πεινά ο λαός μας, δεν θα έχουμε άλλους αφού ο λαός μας έχει ανάγκη, να παν στη δική τους πατρίδα, και να αναλάβουν την υποχρέωση οι συμπατριώτες τους, η κυβέρνησή τους και όχι η δική μας η κυβέρνηση”, επισήμανε.

Ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Κύπρου ανέφερε, επίσης πως δεν έχει καμία σχέση με τα παιδιά αυτά. Πρόσθεσε πως εκεί που ορθοφωνούν, θα τους υποστηρίζει και εκεί που δεν θα ορθοφωνούν θα τους υποδεικνύει ότι αυτό που πάνε να κάνουν δεν είναι σωστό.

Ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Κύπρου είναι πραγματικά κόλαφος για την ελληνική εκκλησιαστική ιεραρχία που μόνο υποκρισία και υπεκφυγή έχει να επιδείξει στις δύσκολες στιγμές που περνάει η πατρίδα μας.

Οι εξελίξεις στην ΕΛ.ΑΣ είναι πραγματικά ραγδαίες καθώς με εντολή του υπουργού Προστασίας του Πολίτη αντικαθιστούνται και μετακινούνται σε άλλες υπηρεσίες Ανώτατοι Αξιωματικοί τηςΑστυνομίας. Με στόχο τον εντοπισμό αστυνομικών που έχουν ενεργό εμπλοκή στη δραστηριότητα του κόμματος της Χρυσής Αυγής και την τυχόν συμμετοχή τους στη διάπραξη αδικημάτων, ο κ.Δένδιας ανέθεσε στον Αρχηγό της Ελληνικής Αστυνομίας, Αντιστράτηγο Νικόλαο Παπαγιαννόπουλο στον Διευθυντή της Υπηρεσίας Εσωτερικών Υποθέσεων της Ελληνικής Αστυνομίας, Ταξίαρχο Παναγιώτη Στάθη, ευρύτατη έρευνα σχετικά με τα καταγγελλόμενα.

Ο Γενικός Γραμματέας Δημόσιας Τάξης του Υπουργείου Δημόσιας Τάξης και Προστασίας του Πολίτη κ. Αθανάσιος Ανδρεουλάκος έκανε δεκτές τις παραιτήσεις του Γενικού Επιθεωρητή Αστυνομίας Νοτίου Ελλάδας, Αντιστράτηγου Ιωάννη Δικόπουλου και του Γενικού Αστυνομικού Διευθυντή Περιφέρειας Στερεάς Ελλάδας, Υποστράτηγου Απόστολου Κασκάνη οι οποίες του υποβλήθηκαν σήμερα για προσωπικούς λόγους.

Επίσης: με Απόφαση του Αρχηγού της ΕΛ.ΑΣ διεξάγεται Ένορκη Διοικητική Εξέταση για το γεγονός ότι την Παρασκευή 20/9/2013, έξω από τα γραφεία της τοπικής οργάνωσης Εύβοιας – Βοιωτίας του κόμματος «Λαϊκός Σύνδεσμος – Χρυσή Αυγή» στη Χαλκίδα και σε απόσταση λίγων εκατοντάδων μέτρων από την έδρα της Αστυνομικής Διεύθυνσης Εύβοιας υπήρχαν άτομα που έφεραν αντικείμενα, τα οποία εμπίπτουν στην κατηγορία περί όπλων (ρόπαλα κλπ), χωρίς να παρέμβουν οι τοπικές αστυνομικές Αρχές, ως όφειλαν και χωρίς να υπάρξει ενημέρωση του Αρχηγείου.

Στο πλαίσιο της ίδιας Ένορκης Διοικητικής Εξέτασης θα εξετασθεί και το ζήτημα τυχόν ευθυνών για τις παραλείψεις που σημειώθηκαν κατά τη διάρκεια της αστυνομικής έρευνας για τη συλλογή πειστηρίων και την ταυτοποίηση συγκεκριμένων ατόμων με τα αντικείμενα που βρέθηκαν στα γραφεία της τοπικής οργάνωσης (κοντάρια, ασπίδες, κράνη κλπ).

Παράλληλα, τίθενται σε διαθεσιμότητα, μέχρι την ολοκλήρωση της Ένορκης Διοικητικής Εξέτασης, ο Διευθυντής της Αστυνομικής Διεύθυνσης Εύβοιας, ο Διοικητής και ο Αξιωματικός Υπηρεσίας του Τμήματος Ασφάλειας Χαλκίδας και ο αστυνομικός – σκοπός της Αστυνομικής Διεύθυνσης, που εκτελούσε υπηρεσία το επίμαχο χρονικό διάστημα.
