DR.OLGA SARANTOPOULOS:
“THE POWER OF GREEKS ABROAD MAY RESULT IN THE RECOVERY OF GREECE AND CYPRUS”
The need to join forces of Hellenism, a challenge and an investment for the future of Greeks abroad stressed in her speech, Dr. Olga Sarantopoulos, Secretary of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE) welcoming the work of the World Conference of Expatriate Physicians and Bioscientists of Greece and Cyprus. The Conference was held in Paphos, Cyprus, under the auspices of the Health Ministers of Cyprus and Greece in cooperation with the Association of Professors of the Medicine School of the University of Athens (EKIPA) and the Central Health Council of Greece (KE.S.Y.) and co-organized with the Pancyprian Medical Association. The Conference was attended by the Minister of Health of Cyprus Mr.Petros Petridis, the Representative of the University of Athens and President of the University Professors Association Mr. Michalis Koutsilieris, the Representative of the Ministry of Health of Greece and President of KE.S.Y. Professor of Medicine of the University of Athens Mr.Panagiotis Skandalakis, the Former Minister of Health of Cyprus Mr.G.Malas, the President of the Pancyprian Medical Association Dr.Andreas Demetriou, representatives of parliament and other dignitaries and many scientists.
SAE Secretary was said that the Conference has a special significance, not only because it is a means of exchanging views and expertise, but also because it offers the opportunity for further networking of Greek originated scientists.
Dr.Sarantopoulos featured as an inexhaustible source of wealth the networks of scientists, politicians, entrepreneurs operating in the world. She pointed out that through the networks members significant initiatives can be taken to reverse the negative climate and to help the economic reconstruction of Greece and Cyprus. She stressed that the great challenge for all is to turn the power of the Hellenes Abroad into positive energy that will allow the redefinition of the relationship with the homeland, creating a two-way relationship of mutual support and sincere cooperation and renegotiating its position in the world.
The SAE Secretary underlined that the critical juncture experiencing Greece and Cyprus requires every effort on the part of the Diaspora to ensure the continuity of Hellenism and the future of our children. Finally she wished for Cyprus a solution that ensures the independence and territorial integrity of the island, the equality of its legal citizens and the guaranty of the principles of law in a Reunited and Free Cyprus.
Dr. Sarantopoulos congratulated the President of the Organizing Committee Mr. Antonios Polydorou, Director of the Invasive Hemodynamic Department of the General Hospital of Athens “O Evangelismos” and the President of the Scientific Committee Mr. George Petrikkos, Professor of Internal Medicine-Infectious Diseases, Head of the D Internal Medicine Department of the Medical School of Athens University,and to all members, as well to the Ministry of Health of Cyprus and Greece, who contributed to the succesful organization of the conference.
The Conference was attended by many distinguished scientists from around the world. Mr. Kypros Nikolaidis, Professor of Foetal Medicine from Kings College and University College London was honored by the Ministry of Health of Cyprus with the “Papanikolaou” Award. Mr.A.Polydorou and M.G.Petrikkos were honored by the Pancyprian Medical Association.
During her visit to Cyprus, Ms. Sarantopoulos met with representatives of the political and social life concerning issues of Hellenism.
