Νατάσα Θεοδωρίδου: Τι της είπε η κόρη της που την συγκίνησε;

Νατάσα Θεοδωρίδου: Τι της είπε η κόρη της που την συγκίνησε;

George Michael puts record £8.25m price tag on home

Source: Dailymail

One of the most expensive houses in Britain – the former home of media mogul Chris Evans and now owned by singer George Michael – is up for sale with an £8.25 million price tag.

The six-bedroom Victorian corner house, which boasts its own tower and walled garden, is – in terms of pounds per square foot – Britain’s dearest property, but with floor space of 4,250 square feet, it is hardly bijou.

The house is in Gilston Road, a small street in South Kensington, and was once nicknamed Goldman Sachs Alley after the investment bank. It is just around the corner from other expensive addresses, including The Boltons and Tregunter Road.

The quiet west London street, with its white stucco houses, is already home to celebrities including David Bowie, comedian Rowan Atkinson and fashion designer Tom Ford. But their houses are likely to be outshone by Michael’s, as the singer hopes to achieve what would be a record-breaking price.

Jonathan Hewlett, of FPD-Savills, said: “This house always commands the most extraordinary price every time it sells.

“It is a mixture of its provenance, its appearance and its location on Gilston Road, which has become a destination address.”

The house hit the headlines last year when radio and television presenter Evans bought it for £6.7million but never moved in. Only months later, it was again in the papers when it was sold on to George Michael for £7.25 million.

In the late Eighties, the property became one of the first houses in London to fetch a sevenfigure sum after it was bought for £1 million from an elderly woman who shared it with dozens of cats.

The Flick family, whose Ger man industrial empire included the Mercedes-Benz motor company, were the buyers and brought over builders from Germany to completely redesign the interior.

“You would be thrilled every time you came home to walk up to the front door and think, ‘This is my house’,” said David Forbes of estate agency Chesterfield.

“It has great presence on the street, with its lovely walled garden. It has always been a marker house for the market.”

But not all estate agents were quite so impressed.

One said: “It’s all hat and no cattle, as they say in Texas.

“You walk into a wonderful series of reception-rooms, with a lovely library, a fine drawing room and huge kitchen, but after that it fizzles out.”

George Lucas plans Bay Area park featuring Yoda and Indiana Jones statues

Source: Hitfix

Star Wars fans might soon have another Yoda statue in the San Francisco Bay area to visit.

Filmmaker George Lucas plans to help build a small park in Marin County that would feature a bronze sculpture of the popular Star Wars character, along with one of Indiana Jones.

Lucas’ estate manager, Sarita Patel, said the Yoda statue would be similar to one in San Francisco’s Presidio neighborhood. That one — a full-sized replica of the Jedi sage — lies atop a fountain outside an arts center where Lucas moved most of his operations in 2005. It has become a big draw for fans.

Lucas applied for a permit Wednesday to demolish a building on the site of the planned park in San Anselmo, the town where he lives, the Marin Independent Journal reported (http://bit.ly/YsKH3u)

He announced over the summer that he planned to donate the land where the building sits to the San Anselmo Chamber of Commerce, and donate the statues for the proposed park. Lucas has since also agreed to pay for the building’s demolition.

The chamber hopes to raise $150,000 to $200,000 to create the park.

San Anselmo Town Manager Debra Stutsman said the demolition application, which includes a historical analysis of the building, will be reviewed by the town’s Planning Commission and Historical Commission.

The building, as well as a fresco inside, date back to 1945.

Patel said Lucas plans to donate the fresco to the Spanish consulate in San Francisco.

Lucas built his film operation in Marin County and had planned to put up a palatial new digital media production studio there. But he abandoned those plans earlier this year in the face of opposition from neighbors and what he said were delays in the approval process.

The years and years of notes, eventuated as the book Do You Know Who I Am?

The cover of Adrianne’s book, Do You Know Who I Am?

As the daughter of Greek Cypriot parents, author Adrianne Roy would jot notes about what it was like for first generations living in England; identity struggle, dramatic events and the search for independence in what she coins a “man’s world”.

The years and years of notes, eventuated as the book Do You Know Who I Am? “The book is about the journey of that generation of Cypriots who left their sun-baked rural villages of Cyprus in the ’40s and ’50s and sailed for England hoping for a better life and found themselves in smoggy cramped post-war London with its newfound language barriers and culture clashes. It is a comedy, but with dramatic undertones which shows how those Cypriots slowly became anglicised. It is both historic and nostalgic.”

The book has already been optioned by an English film production company to turn it into an international feature film. The screenplay is currently under commission and the producers expect the script to be ready by the end of this year. “I want to put our island on the world map,” says the author. “I want the world to see our peoples journey and how inspirational they are.

It was a daunting prospect for those who uprooted from their homeland to seek a better life in a far away country with no money in their pocket, no education and no language and surviving against the odds through hardship. “In times where there were no conveniences or technology they got on with it with humour and never complained.” Humour is a large part of the book, as is the journey of the migrant.

“It was the humour that kept that generation of English Cypriots going through very hard times,” she explains. “You can hide sorrow and hardship behind humour and this is the essence of my book. The title also has a double meaning : many Cypriots use that phrase as a form of egoistic humour but underneath it hides the sadness of living a double life not knowing whether you are Cypriot or English.”

Adrianne has already started on her second book and has well and truly given up her career in law, which she has been working in for over 15 years.

“To me, writing is my fulfilment in life. Like some people have hobbies for example the gym, sports, gardening; for me writing is my hobby. It is my pleasure and my therapy.”

Migrants set fire to Greek detention centre

Komotini, Greece – Over 500 undocumented migrants detained for the past three months at the Komotini police academy in eastern Greece have rioted and set fire to the premises.

“The riots have stopped. It is not the first but it is the largest. It is inhumane,” a ranking officer told Euobserver on Saturday (November 24) evening.

The entire site is on lockdown.

Outside the gates, a police officer in riot gear stands guard armed with a machine gun in near complete silence. Behind him, a parking lot and the nearby buildings are obscured in darkness. The lights turned off.

The officer says all 520 migrants set fire to their mattresses on Thursday with riots raging all through Friday and into early Saturday. “We don’t know what to do, we do not have a solution,” he says.

Four of the 15 guards overseeing the detainees were injured. Another four migrants were reportedly injured and around 50 arrested. Some were chanting “freedom” and “send us home” report local media.

Guards fired tear gas as the migrants, mostly young men from Pakistan and Afghanistan, pelted the officers with rocks.

The scale of the violence has prompted Greece’s minister of public order to hold a late night meeting with the city’s public authorities.

The young men at Komotini were swept up from Athens as part of Greece’s operation “Xenios Zeus.” Prime Minister Antonis Samaras had launched the campaign in the beginning of August in an effort to “clean up” and “make safe” Athens.

The campaign’s first week detained in Athens some 6,030 people suspected of having entered the country illegally. Greek police then arrested 1,525 of them.

“Those arrested will be deported to their home countries,” a spokesperson for Greece’s ministry of public order and citizen protection told this website in an email in August.

Authorities says Xenios Zeus will spread throughout the entire country.

But housing the migrants rounded up en masse has posed a number of logistical problems. Authorities are placing them in residences once used by police cadets, prompting protests from locals who oppose their presence.

Around 1,000 cadets are normally schooled at Komotini’s police academy. Now, around 300 remain on site in two of the five buildings. The remaining three buildings have been turned into detention centres.

Residents in surrounding villages say they feel overwhelmed by the number of undocumented migrants that have entered the country.

“Three months ago around a hundred would gather at the train station on a daily basis. Some would ask for food and water and we would give it to them,” a farmer at the Nea Vissa border town told this website. “They were very polite and never caused any harm,” he said.

But public anti-immigrant sentiment runs high and many favour the 12.5 km razor-wire fence that runs across the land where the Evros river loops into Turkey.

The fence is meant to dissuade people from crossing into the country and forces some to attempt the more perilous river crossing.

A section runs across garlic and asparagus crops that belong to local Nea Vissa farmers. Tractors till the fields up to the fence amid heavy guard from Greek border police, the Greek military, and the EU’s border control agency, Frontex.

“In July 2012 we had 6,500 illegal migrants who passed the border. In August, we had only 1,800. In September, only 71 illegal migrants, in October only 26 and now there are none,” said Pashalis Syritoudis, chief of police at Orestiadas on the Greek Turkish border.

Meanwhile, border police continue to stop vehicles at random along the E85 highway that runs the length of the border.

Four police patrol points are set up between the 120 km stretch of highway between Orestiadas in the north and Alexandroupoli in the south. The officers are checking vehicles for smuggled migrants.

Locals at a village in Peplos in the Evros Delta told EUobsever that smugglers avoid the highway. “They take the back roads and villages and go through the mountains,” they said.

Greek police recover stolen Olympia antiquities

Recovered objects stolen from a museum in Olympia, Greece in February (24 Nov)

All 76 artefacts stolen in February were successfully recovered

Greek police have recovered all the antiquities stolen in February from a museum in Olympia, the birthplace of the ancient Olympics.

Three men were arrested in the western city of Patras when they tried to sell the most valuable artefact – a gold ring – to an undercover police officer.

During the robbery, two masked men smashed display cabinets and overpowered a guard, officials said.

Greece has cut museum staffing as part of austerity measures.

One of the suspects tried to sell the gold ring – dating from the late Bronze Age, around 3,200 years ago – to a police officer posing as a potential buyer, officials said.

The original asking price had been 1.5m euros (£1.2m) but the price dropped to 300,000 euros.

Police recovered all the other stolen items, which had been wrapped in a sack and buried in a field in a village near Patras.

The antiquities will be returned to the museum next week.

The mayor of Olympia said at the time of the robbery that there was a direct link with the policy of cuts and Greece’s economic crisis.

Culture Minister Pavlos Geroulanos offered his resignation but it was not accepted.

The robbery was an embarrassment for the Greek authorities, coming just weeks after the theft of a Picasso painting and other works from the Athens National Gallery.
