Greece given tax cheat list — again

GREEK prosecutors were checking a list of possible tax cheats, court sources said on Thursday, in a case that has highlighted Athens’s failure to crack down on tax evasion, one of the factors behind its financial crisis.

Given to Greece for a second time by French authorities last Friday, the list contains hundreds of names of Greek account holders at global bank HSBC in Switzerland, which authorities want to investigate over suspected tax evasion.

The affair has enraged the public and opposition parties already furious over the failure of consecutive governments to crack down on the rich and powerful, while years of recession have wiped out a fifth of economic output and hammered middle-class living standards.

France originally handed over the list to Athens in 2010. But former Greek government officials did not act on it, fuelling public anger and prompting suspicion that some names were erased before it was handed over to parliament earlier this year.

To put an end to the confusion, Greek prosecutors travelled to Paris last week to reobtain the original list. They are now cross-checking the two documents to find out if any names were removed.

“There might be a preliminary finding by Monday on whether the list was tampered with,” a court official said.

The list originates from wide-ranging data stolen by a former HSBC employee, which Paris obtained. Greeks have dubbed it the “Lagarde List” after Christine Lagarde, the head of the International Monetary Fund, who was French finance minister when the list was originally handed over.

Greece has so far failed to convict any big names of tax evasion, fuelling popular disenchantment with a political class that promised to force the wealthy to share some of the pain of the debt crisis. By contrast, other authorities around Europe have used the data to pursue cases of suspected tax evasion .

Πίτσα Παπαδοπούλου: «Έχω ακόμα προτάσεις»

Η Πίτσα Παπαδοπούλου είναι σταθερή αξία στον χώρο του τραγουδιού, κάτι που φαίνεται από την καριέρα της.

Είναι από τις τραγουδίστριες που έχουν ερμηνεύσει μεγάλες επιτυχίες, οι οποίες θεωρούνται διαχρονικές. «Εγώ δεν είμαι λαϊκιά τραγουδίστρια, είμαι τραγουδίστρια. Τι πάει να πει λαϊκό; Αλλά επί χρόνια δεν ήξεραν την αξία των ελληνικών τραγουδιών», δήλωσε στο Πρώτο Θέμα και συνέχισε: «Έχω ακόμα προτάσεις. Έσπειρα τόσα χρόνια και τώρα πρέπει να θερίσω. Τώρα μόλις γύρισα από συναυλία σε Αμερική και Καναδά. Το απολαμβάνω ακόμα και δεν μου αρέσει να λέω «όχι». Τόσα χρόνια δουλεύω και δικαιούμαι μια καλή ζωή. Και δουλεύω ακόμα για να είμαι εντάξει στις υποχρεώσεις μου. Ζω από αυτή την δουλειά».

Δημήτρης Μητροπάνος: Κυκλοφορούν πέντε άγνωστα τραγούδια του!

Λίγο πριν φύγει από τη ζωή, ο Δημήτρης Μητροπάνος ετοίμαζε νέο δίσκο.

Τα πέντε τραγούδια που πρόλαβε να ηχογραφήσει κυκλοφορούν σε λίγες μέρες μαζί με μια ειδική έκδοση.

Είχε μόλις γυρίσει από το Παρίσι όπου είχε πάει για το καθιερωμένο του check up, όταν μπήκε στο studio του Μίνωα Μάτσα για να ετοιμάσει το νέο του δίσκο. Μέσα σε ένα βράδυ ηχογράφησε με τη μία πέντε τραγούδια.

«Απόψε με ζητάει κι άλλο ξενύχτι, στους δρόμους που μυρίζουν πανικό. Κι οι δυνατοί ξεσκίσανε το δίχτυ και ταξιδέψανε σε άλλον ουρανό» είχε τραγουδήσει τους στίχους του Ακου Δασκαλόπουλου.

Το επόμενο ραντεβού δόθηκε για τη δεύτερη μέρα του Πάσχα, στις 17 Απριλίου. Η ζωή όμως δεν άφησε τον αξέχαστο Μητροπάνο να είναι συνεπής στη συνάντησή τους αφού εκείνη την ημέρα «έφυγε» αιφνιδίως από τη ζωή.

Αυτά τα πέντε τραγούδια, μαζί με μία έκδοση 48 σελίδων που περιέχει και σπάνιες φωτογραφίες από τη ζωή του, πρόκειται να κυκλοφορήσουν σύντομα.

Μία ευτυχισμένη οικογένεια με παιδιά!

Αυτός θα μπορούσε να είναι ο μοναδικός ίσως τίτλος για να περιγράψει την ζωή του Σάκη Ρουβά και της Κάτιας Ζυγούλη οι οποίοι τα τελευταία πέντε χρόνια έχουν αποφασίσει να αφοσιωθούν στην οικογένειά τους. Το ζευγάρι καθημερινά ασχολείται αποκλειστικά και μόνο με την ανατροφή των παιδιών του θέλοντας να βλέπει το χαμόγελο στα χείλη των δύο παιδιών του. Της 4χρονης Αναστασίας και του μόλις 18 μηνών Αλέξανδρου ο οποίος πλέον μπορεί και περπατά και είναι περισσότερο αυτόνομος από ό,τι πριν. Ο Σάκης, κάθε πρωί παραδίδει αυτοπροσώπως στο σχολικό την κόρη του ενώ το ίδιο κάνει και το μεσημέρι. Όσο για την Κάτια Ζυγούλη η οποία διανύει τις τελευταίες εβδομάδες της τρίτης εγκυμοσύνης της, φροντίζει να κάνει ό,τι μπορεί για να βλέπει τα παιδιά της χαρούμενα. Προ ημερών, ο φακός του Hello απαθανάτισε την ευτυχισμένη μαμά με ένα ροζ ποδήλατο, αυτό της κόρης της, σε βόλτα τους κοντά στο σπίτι τους. Λίγο πριν, ο φωτογράφος είχε απαθανατίσει τον Σάκη Ρουβά να παραλαμβάνει τη μικρή Αναστασία από το σχολικό που μόλις είχε φτάσει έξω από το σπίτι, γεμίζοντάς την με φιλιά και τρυφερές αγκαλιές.

Οι μαθητές Δάφνη Τρέπκα, Νίκος Τρέπκας, Πένη Βυσσαρίου και Τζακ Προκοπίου, έχουν κάθε λόγο να αισθάνονται υπερήφανοι, αφού χάρισαν στο σχολείο τους, το South Oakleigh Secondary College, επί της Bakers Rd., South Oakleigh, πρωτιές, που κάνουν τους δασκάλους, τη σχολική τους κοινότητα και όλους εμάς υπερήφανους.

Η Δάφνη συμμετείχε στην ομάδα μαθητών που έλαβαν μέρος στη Βουλή των Ελλήνων – συνέδριο Νεολαίας, στην Αθήνα. Η επιλογή έγινε μετά από τη βράβευση έκθεσής της με θέμα: «Human Rights in Today’s Society» («Τα ανθρώπινα δικαιώματα στην σημερινή κοινωνία»). Η Δάφνη αναφέρθηκε διεξοδικά και εμπεριστατωμένα στα ανθρώπινα δικαιώματα και διακρίθηκε για το υψηλό επίπεδο ανάλυσης του θέματος. Οι εκθέσεις κρίθηκαν από επιτροπή ακαδημαϊκών, με έμφαση επίσης στο συντακτικό και τη γραμματική.
Τα έξοδα της συμμετοχής της Δάφνης, αεροπορικό εισιτήριο και διαμονή, καλύφθηκαν από το Υπουργείο Παιδεία και Θρησκευμάτων της Ελλάδας.

Αξιοσημείωτη είναι και η πρωτιά του Νίκου σε παναυστραλιανό επίπεδο, στην κατηγορία ελεύθερης πάλης. Συγκεκριμένα, στους αγώνες 16-17 ετών στο Brazilian jiu-jitsu

Η 10χρονη Πένη Βυσσαρίου αγωνίστηκε σε ένα άλλο χώρο. Στην τοξοβολία, όπου βγήκε δεύτερη στην Αυστραλία και 8η σε παγκόσμιο επίπεδο.
Τέλος, ο 13χρονος και πολλά υποσχόμενος Τζακ, που αγωνίζεται με τους Oakleigh Cannons, αφού κέρδισε υποτροφία για να παίξει με την ομάδα των Τζούνιορ του Παναθηναϊκού, ταξίδεψε στη Θεσσαλονίκη.

Η δραστήρια καθηγήτρια τους, κ. Σόφη Σταματελάτου, θα πει: «Το σχολείο μας είναι υπερήφανο για τις επιτυχίες των μαθητών μας σε όλους τους τομείς. Πρόσφατα, μαθητής του Year 12, κέρδισε το χρυσό μετάλλιο του Πανεπιστημίου Νέας Νότιας Ουαλίας σε διαγωνισμό γραπτού λόγου. Ωστόσο, χειροκροτούμε και τις επιτυχίες των μαθητών μας τόσο στον τομέα των Σπορ όσο και των Τεχνών. Και οι επιτυχίες τους είναι πολλές. Τους στηρίζουμε και τους ευχόμαστε να πραγματοποιήσουν τα όνειρά τους».
Αναφορικά με τους νεοφερμένους από την Ελλάδα μαθητές, η κ. Σταματελάτου προσθέτει: «Δίνουμε μεγάλη έμφαση, τους ενθαρρύνουμε και στηρίζουμε τις προσπάθειές τους για επιτυχίες».

Αξίζει να αναφέρουμε ότι η διευθύντρια του Κολλεγίου, κ. Debbie Locco, και η υποδιευθύντρια, κ. Ελένη Κοζιάρη, έχουν προγραμματίσει επίσκεψη μαθητών στην εκκλησία Τριών Ιεραρχών Κλάυτον, όπου θα παραδώσουν καλάθια με τρόφιμα για τους μη προνομιούχους, με πολλές ευχές, για Καλά Χριστούγεννα και Καλή χρονιά!

Jamison High School student Claire Fassoulidis tops state in HSC Greek

CLAIRE Fassoulidis has topped the state in modern Greek continuers – and she did it all for her beloved grandmother.

The Jamison High School student studied Greek at the Saturday School of Community Languages at The Hills Sports High School for the HSC.

The 18-year-old has also topped her high school with an incredible ATAR of 99.25.

Claire said she would often speak Greek over the phone with her grandmother Georgia during her HSC studies.

“I did this for my grandmother. My grandmother passed away three weeks before the exams,” Claire said.

She said tough times were no excuse and as well as grieving for her grandmother, she had to cope with her parents’ divorce.

“You can do anything, no matter what hardships you face,” she said.

“All my hard work paid off and I have been acknowledged for all my hard work.

“It is important to know that even if you don’t have the financial luxuries that some people have – anything is possible.”

Claire, who lives in St Marys, is a former York Public School student. She said she had also topped her school subjects during the year.

She plans to study physiotherapy at the University of Sydney next year, but also hopes to teach Greek.

PENRITH Selective High School has again achieved outstanding results in the HSC.

The school had 11 students who became HSC All Rounders after achieving more than 90 per cent in their best 10 units and more than 250 results in individual subjects with a mark above 90 per cent.

Principal John Elton said he was proud of his students’ results.

“Overall results are excellent and are what we expected from a hard-working and talented year group,” Mr Elton said.

“The teachers are excited about the achievements of their students and looking forward to hearing about their ATARs.”

Mr Elton said 100 per cent of students had scored in the top two bands in subjects including history extension, drama, extension 1 English, mathematics extension 1 and 2, music 1, society and culture and Italian extension.

He said there were also many standout performances, including Owen Morris, who scored full marks in extension music and whose trumpet performance was shortlisted for encore, and Jessica Washington and Siri Anderson, who achieved particularly impressive results in every subject.

Minister Nicholas Kotsiras wishes everyone a happy ‘multicultural’ Christmas.

Minister for Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship Nicholas Kotsiras officially launched the final component of a four-year, $10.2 million joint project between the Victorian Government and the City of Melbourne to upgrade the city’s much-loved cultural precincts.

The fund has covered the revitalisation of key laneways, street beautification, art work, landscaping and lighting as well as promoting the historical and cultural links to the migrant communities.

The project has revitalised Chinatown, Carlton’s Lygon Street and the Greek precinct of Little Lonsdale Street.

Mr Kotsiras paid tribute to those migrants who settled in Melbourne’s three key cultural precincts with snapshots of the cultural history and colourful characters of these important migrant precincts.

Mr Kotsiras said the precincts exemplified Victoria’s history of welcoming and embracing multiculturalism.

“The Victorian Government believes that recognising and supporting the multicultural heritage of diverse citizens, who have helped build this State and nation, has led to a more unified and cohesive society,” Mr Kotsiras said.

“Melbourne’s Chinatown has been a thriving precinct since the Gold Rush era, and its enduring popularity is a testament to the vitality of our State’s significant Chinese community.

“Lonsdale Street has been the heart of Victoria’s Greek community for decades. The restaurants, cafés and music stores that line the precinct created a home away from home for Greek migrants, many of whom came to Melbourne after World War II.”

Mr Kotsiras said the Italian Cultural Precinct provided a fascinating window into the history of the characters and landmarks that shaped Lygon Street in Carlton into the historic heartland of Melbourne’s Italian community

“The stories of these landmarks and the characters who shaped the precinct are fascinating. They are part of Victoria’s rich migrant history, and they are stories that deserve to be shared,” Mr Kotsiras said.

“Visitors to the area will be able to be transported back in time, to learn about the history of the buildings, shops, restaurants and the people who have made this neighbourhood what it is today.

“As Victorians, these areas are close to all of our hearts, as a place to eat, to socialise, and to experience the cultural diversity that we are so privileged to experience and enjoy here in this State.”

Mr Kotsiras thanked representatives from the Chinese, Greek and Italian communities, and local traders for their enthusiastic involvement in the project.

“Melbourne, and indeed the entire State of Victoria, is home to well-established and fast-growing migrant communities, that have greatly enriched every aspect of life in this State and have become an integral part of our harmonious, multicultural society,” Mr Kotsiras said.

High achiever gets dream job

Dean honours, two years running, Melbourne National scholarship, and the Deutsche Bank Penultimate year scholarship, made graduate Elias Vitsentzatos a man to remember at his graduation.

Vitsentzatos was given the honour of the valedictory speech to his fellow classmates after graduating this year from his Bachelor of Commerce from Melbourne University. In his speech he praised the strong relationships created in class and outside.

“Today I’m part of a group of diverse and very talented individuals, who have the strength and ability to pursue their goals in life with great vigour and intensity,” he said.

“We have all grown as individuals during our time at university and in the future I am sure we will all continue to better ourselves and excel in all aspects of personal and professional life.”

He took the time to thank his parents and specifically his brothers and his grandparents. On the cards for Vitsentzatos is a budding career at Deutsche Bank as an analyst. He starts next year.
